How to Compare Flight Prices and Baggage Allowances

The lowest advertised flight price is not always the lowest total cost. Before choosing a ticket, compare what each fare includes and whether the journey suits your needs. Use this checklist to make a clearer comparison.

1. Compare the Total Cost

Search using the same travel dates, passenger numbers and cabin class. Then check the final price, including taxes and any extras you need, such as checked baggage, seat selection or meals. Compare prices in the same currency.

For example, a ticket costing 100 plus 30 for baggage costs more than a ticket costing 120 with the baggage you need already included.

2. Check Cabin and Checked Baggage Separately

Cabin baggage travels with you, while checked baggage goes in the aircraft hold. Check the permitted number of bags, weight and dimensions for each. A small personal item may have a separate allowance.

Baggage rules can differ between fares on the same airline. Check the allowance for your exact ticket and every flight in your itinerary, including the return journey. If you need extra baggage, compare the advance purchase price with the airline’s published airport charges.

3. Consider the Whole Journey

Compare departure and arrival times, airports, total journey duration and connections. A cheaper flight may involve a long stopover, an inconvenient arrival time or additional transport costs.

If the itinerary involves separate tickets or a self-transfer, check whether you must collect baggage, check in again or meet transit entry requirements. Leave enough time for these steps.

4. Read Change and Cancellation Conditions

Check whether the fare allows changes or refunds. Look for change fees, fare differences, cancellation charges and no-show conditions. If your plans are uncertain, compare the cost of a flexible fare with the restrictions of the cheapest option.

5. Check Before Paying

Use the flight search tools on Advance Vision to explore options, then verify the current price, baggage allowance and terms with the booking provider before completing your reservation.
